Purple Squirrel the Enlightened Recruitment Company Founded by Engineers I am well qualified to comment on the lack of excellence out there in recruitment for Engineering and Technical sectors, after I was made redundant and had a career break, my efforts to re-enter the job market brought me into contact with plenty of recruitment agencies. You already have your personal opinions about recruiters, but the next time you get a call from an agency, try an experiment and flip the call back at them and ask their recruiter about the jobs they’ve ever done. How many of those callers will have an engineering degree, a masters and time in industry to match yours? How many could read a drawing, change one, perform a fuel economy or Takt time calculation? How many have meshed a frame for an FEA analysis or spent their days considering how your attribute feels from the cockpit or driving seat? How many actually know what the requirements are for a PPAP submission let alone the excellence you put into your job every day to ensure your products meet them? You know the answer already and I guarantee you, not very many. There are some star recruiters of course who talk well and when one finds you then you are happy to take their calls, but I would still check out their background (www.LinkedIn.com is an excellent way) so see if they are just very good at their patter. How can these individuals on whom we rely, spot the talent in our CV’s or genuinely understand our career aspirations and match our details accurately to the requirements from the Client, when their foundation principles doesn’t even closely resemble our own? The answer of course is they can’t and that is why you get their daily or weekly carpet bomb email with their Agency’s lists of “opportunities” for which you are not even qualified let alone interested. That is why their businesses are run like telesales call centres, with low cost, under-qualified labour feverishly calling you and even reading from a script to get a CV. It’s a numbers game; if they can make enough calls and send enough mail shots somewhere out there they will find you, the individual I now call the Purple Squirrel who has the exact qualifications the client is looking for. Small wonder, that from a candidate perspective, you hate the fact that the typical recruitment agency is making money off the back of your career moves when they are so under-qualified for the service they are providing. You see them as a “Necessary Evil” and you understandably put up with them just long enough to engineer your next move before you change your mobile number and delete the email account you created especially for their Spam. Employers of course have had little choice. They have shortages in skill sets that their business activities require must be filled. The decision to out-source their search and selection activity is always a question of staffing and costs for the HR department. Your HR teams are under pressure to guarantee results too. When my business partner and I started Purple Squirrel, we knew from the outset we should, could and would be different. Between us we have 3 decades of engineering and technical know-how in Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Commercial and Programme Management and cultural work experience in all continents. With our industrial insight, the business of attracting, screening and matching Purple Squirrel candidates to job vacancies becomes a precision activity; if a candidate is available in the labour market at a given time it doesn’t take us long to connect with them. It is as close as you can achieve to the decision-making hiring manager sitting down and doing it themselves – but of course you don’t have that luxury of time you have a department to run. We can tell by the number of candidate and client enquiries that the message that Purple Squirrel has arrived is starting to resonate. Over time we plan to carefully grow to achieve what we believe is a long overdue change in the way Recruitment should be done for the Engineering sectors. Whether you are a Candidate thinking about your next move, or you are an HR Manager or Department Manager with vacancies to fill, Purple Squirrel is here and pleased to offer you a different Recruitment experience. |
